Frequently Asked Questions

What is the term of the lease? The lease begins at move in and ends with the college’s fiscal year (June 30) regardless of start date. There is not a provision for breaking the lease early.

Is there a security deposit? Yes, it is the same as one month’s rent, prior to occupancy in addition to first month’s rent, and will be refundable upon move-out if there are no damages.

Will the utilities be on? Water, electric and gas will be on but need to be changed into your name in a timely manner. Water can be obtained through the City of Kalamazoo. Gas and Electric is through Consumers Energy.

Do the houses have air conditioning? No college owned property has air conditioning.

Are appliances included? A stove and refrigerator are included in all of our properties. In faculty housing, there are washer and dryer hookups in the basement, but the appliances are not included.

Am I responsible for lawn care? No. The college has an outside service do the lawn care.

Am I responsible for snow removal? Yes, the tenant is responsible for their own snow clearing, including sidewalks in front of house.

Are pets allowed? No pets are allowed in college owned properties. Please see K’s Policy on Pets, Service Animals, and Emotional Support Animals for Students.

Is there overnight parking on the street? The City does not allow overnight street parking in the area.
